How to Write a Research Paper

A research paper consists of no less than 2 pages and no more than a maximum of 3 pages and a works cited page.
Simple steps to writing a great research paper
1. Open a new word document for your research paper.
2. Put your document in MLA format.
· Change the format style from “Normal” to “No Spacing.”
· Go to insert, then click on page number and press on “Top of Page” and click on Plain Number 3.
· This is your header and should be on the top right of the page. Then write your last name but keep the page number “1” with a space in between. Example, Rodriguez 1. Then close header.
· Next, put your font size to 12 and your font must be on either “Times New Roman” or“Arial”.
·Then go to the paragraph box and change to“Double Space”.
·After that you must have a proper heading. On the first line put your first and last name and press enter. On the second line you put you teacher’s name and press enter. On the third line of the heading should be your class name. On the fourth and final line place the date that your assignment is due. Example, 2 May 2013.

3. In order to start writing your research paper you must make a works cited page. First you have to come up with a question that deals with what you are writing the research paper about. Once you found a question that works out for you, place it where the Title would go. Then press enter and go to “insert”and click on page break. This will scroll down to another page where you will make your works cited page.
4. Next, you need to search for about 3 articles from the internet that supports your Question where your title would be. Make sure you save the website, book, or movie from which you are getting your information from. (Keep it Simple).

Works Cited Page
After you find your 3 references you are now ready to place them in your works cited page.

5. On your 3rd page place your title as Works Cited centered on the top of the page.
(Your works cited must be in the Hanging formation)
To do so you go to where you would make your document double spaced but go down and click on the Lines pacing option.
Once's you have done that go to indentation and click on special. Scroll down and press on (hanging) indent.

If you notice in the example above the Hanging Indent is basically the opposite of a regular indent which you would use to start a new paragraph.
You MUST make sure that every punctuation, space, and period is correct.

6. Now you are ready to begin writing your research paper. Begin by skipping a line from the title and this will be your thesis statement.
You write: The purpose of this research paper is to discuss (finish sentence).

Step 1: When looking for quotes for your research paper try to find quotes that relate to the thesis statement. At the end of the quote you must add the Act, Scene and line/page number followed by a period.
Step 2: Your main body paragraphs will consist of:

________ stated, "Your Quote"

Transitional phrase
This will help you develop a well written paragraph to support your quotes.
Step 3. Once you are done writing all your paragraph's, use the backspace button to erase the beginnings of each line in your paragraph.
Example: The main idea of this paragraph is.
Step 4: Organize your paragraph's correctly. If needed add interpretive lead-in's to make your paragraph's sound better.
Step 5: Develop all your paragraphs thoroughly by using transition words and good facts. Make sure to use examples and concrete sentences.
Step 6: Write intro paragraph with thesis statement and supporting details for your topic sentences.
Step 7: Then write your conclusion and add all information that you have used in the research paper.
Step 8: Try to use appropriate language and use techniques learned like metaphors, simile.
Step 9: Get someone to proof read your research paper to make sure that everything is right.
